The KNOW WAY program directly addresses the experiences of our youth in their day to day lives. The program is theatre-based with two components: (1) a theatrical production performed by peers addressing a topic relevant in young people’s lives and (2) a follow up workshop in the classroom with trained adult facilitators offering factual information in an engaging format that is thought provoking and stimulates open discussions. KNOW WAY aligns with and is clearly linked to the Health and Safety Curriculum Standards, the Safe and Drug Free Schools Standards, and the S.C. Guidance and Counseling Standards. Greenville county school Health Dept. and other administrative leaders experienced the program its first year, and subsequently have given continued support for implementation throughout the District. It was mutually decided between the District and SCCT, to target our Substance Abuse Prevention Program to the 8th grade. At the District’s recommendation, we will be offering the fall tour of this program around RED RIBBON WEEK. We offer the program again in the spring (March.) What to Expect Part 1 A cast of teenagers will tour with a production, a 50-minute production about alcohol and drug abuse. Immediately following the performance, there will be a brief "talkback" with the audience about the show. This production will demonstrate both the alluring and the compromising effects that drugs and alcohol can have on a young person’s life with the objective of generating discussion and reflection about personal stances on drug and alcohol abuse. Part 2 Within a week, a 45-50 minute follow-up workshop will occur in small classroom settings with trained adult actors/facilitators. The workshop is thought provoking, engaging, educational and memorable for the students. The facilitators offer factual information, dispel myths and offer alternatives to drugs & alcohol through group activities and open discussions. Availability Our program is grant funded and therefore offered at no cost to your school. However, due to funding limitations, this program is currently offered this fall to the 8th grades to the first schools that respond to our mailings until our funding has expired. We are committed to helping our youth make better choices to be healthy, safe, respectful, disciplined and compassionate adults. There is so much to learn and experience as a young person today and we are committed to helping our youth KNOW the WAY. http://www.scchildrenstheatre.org/TOPS/KNOW%20WAY.htm

Theatre Outreach Programs Students conduct Outreach Programs at local schools, youth internment camps, senior communities, and other institutions. Training in facilitation and performance skills encourage social responsibility through the sharing of theatre. Outreach Programs provide an opportunity for students to be proactive in reaching out to communities through teaching and application of theatrical techniques. Through the experience of environmental and participatory theatre where there is no separation between actor and audience, students trained in facilitation skills as well as acting skills, engage the community in a total educational theatrical experience. http://www.ulv.edu/theatre/stories.html
